How to fight Death Knight

Beat Frost Death Knight

Threat Medium12.0.130s cheat sheet

What they want to do

Death Grip you into Chains of Ice, press Pillar of Frost, then dump Remorseless Winter and Frostwyrm's Fury while Mind Freeze sits on whoever is peeling. They win Solo Shuffle if they own the room and your caster cooldowns land inside Anti-Magic Zone.

Main danger

Pillar of Frost burst after Death Grip. Anti-Magic Zone deletes a magic window. Anti-Magic Shell eats the crowd control you needed to stop the dump.

Interrupt priority

  1. 1 Their healer, not the death knight

Frost does not cast the kill. Every interrupt goes on the healer they froze out of the play. Do not spend it on the death knight.

  2. 1 Mind Freeze range (yours to respect)

Do not greed a cast at 10 yards during Pillar of Frost. They win the round on one locked healer.

  3. 2 Your magic crowd control into Anti-Magic Shell

Throw a cheap spell first to bait Anti-Magic Shell, then stun. Shell eats Polymorph and other magic crowd control — stun after it drops.

Watch for

  • Pillar of Frost after Death Grip into Chains of Ice on one target — wall or leave melee before Remorseless Winter plants you.
  • Anti-Magic Zone dropped at your feet the moment you press offensive cooldowns — drag the fight out before you dump.
  • Anti-Magic Shell eating the first magic crowd control of the round, then Asphyxiate on the peeler.
  • Death Grip behind a pillar into Chains of Ice so you cannot get line of sight back.

Offensive cooldowns

  • Pillar of Frost. Major damage window. Assume Remorseless Winter and Frostwyrm's Fury ride with it. Wall or leave melee before they chain you.
  • Remorseless Winter. Slow plus damage while you are planted. Walk out of the circle; do not melee it during Pillar of Frost.
  • Frostwyrm's Fury. Cone burst after you are chained. Step out of the line or already be in a defensive.
  • Obliterate / Frost Strike. Melee dump inside Pillar of Frost. This is also when Death Strike starts topping them if you keep hitting without a plan.
  • Howling Blast. Ranged chip and slow. Do not ignore it on a kiting healer while you tunnel the death knight.

Defensive cooldowns

  • Anti-Magic Shell. Magic absorb, sometimes a reflect. Stop dumping spells. Swap to physical or sit until it drops.
  • Anti-Magic Zone. Your caster go disappears inside it. Drag the fight out of the dome before you press offensive cooldowns.
  • Icebound Fortitude. Stun immune plus damage reduction. Sit the go or swap. Do not finish burst into it.
  • Lichborne. Fear and charm immune, and they self-heal. Keep chip pressure; do not read it as a full wall.
  • Death Strike. Reactive self-heal off the damage you just dealt. If they are topping, you are feeding it — chip or sit.

Crowd control

  • Asphyxiate
  • Death Grip
  • Chains of Ice
  • Blinding Sleet if talented
  • Gorefiend's Grasp if talented

Dispels

  • Chains of Ice is a magic snare — dispel it if you have a magic dispel or you stay planted for Remorseless Winter.
  • Anti-Magic Shell eats magic crowd control. Do not leave your only peel as a spell if Shell is still available.

Mobility

Death's Advance, Death Grip. They pick the pillar and pull you to it. Do not stand at grip range on a corner. Roots and terrain beat a straight-line kite — Death's Advance ignores slow, it does not ignore a wall.

Kill windows

  • Anti-Magic Zone expired, Icebound Fortitude down, and they already spent Pillar of Frost
  • Anti-Magic Shell burned on a junk spell and they are still in the open
  • After Frostwyrm's Fury with no kill — they are committed and often out of a wall

When to run

Pillar of Frost is up, you are gripped, and you have no interrupt and no wall. Line Remorseless Winter. Do not greed melee uptime inside Anti-Magic Zone.

When to attack

Outside Anti-Magic Zone. After Icebound Fortitude. When they wasted Frostwyrm's Fury on a target that already walled. Physical damage still works through Anti-Magic Shell.

Common tricks

  • Anti-Magic Zone is for your go, not theirs. They drop it the second you press offensive cooldowns.
  • They Anti-Magic Shell the first magic crowd control every round. Throw a cheap spell, then stun after Shell drops.
  • Death Grip into a pillar is the setup. Chains of Ice just keeps you there for Remorseless Winter.

Common mistakes against them

  • Dumping a full caster go into Anti-Magic Zone.
  • Spending your only magic peel into Anti-Magic Shell.
  • Casting in Mind Freeze range during Pillar of Frost.
  • Trinketing Chains of Ice instead of Asphyxiate.
